about

The lyrics from "Comrade Gene" were adapted from a poetic eulogy written about the great american labor organizer and radical, Eugene V. Debs. Dylan wrote this song, not just in memory of Debs, but also for a good friend of his who passed away after living a long life in service to others, impacting Dylan's life deeply. It is a ballad for all those who toil in solidarity with the poor and the oppressed - may they find rest, if not in life, in death.

lyrics

Comrade ‘Gene

Oh ‘Gene! Dear comrade!
Won’t you come up here, beside me, Oh ‘Gene
You’re worthy of rest, Oh ‘Gene
You lived your life for love
for the least of our sisters & our brethren
Our toilers, our poor

Won’t you come up here beside me, Oh ‘Gene
And find some rest you, dear Comrade, some rest
Won’t you come up here beside me, Oh ‘Gene
Lay your weary head down
you’ve worked tirelessly
won’t you find some rest.

Oh ‘Gene, it was or it was for such as you
That the foundations of this earth were laid on down
In Justice, in Mercy, in Love
for the least of our sisters & our brethren
Our toilers, our poor

(chorus)

Well done good and faithful
won’t you join us here
at the feast of our toilers, our poor

(chorus)
